Minister Activities
Rev. Michael DeVries, presently serving our churches as pastor of the Edgerton, MN PRC, has accepted the call extended to him to serve as the next pastor of the First PRC of Edmonton, AB, Canada. However, at this time (the week before Christmas) it is believed that the DeVries family will not be able to move until at least February because of immigration procedures.
Rev. C. Terpstra, pastor of the South Holland, IL PRC, has declined the call he had been considering to serve as pastor of the Lynden, WA PRC.
Our vacant congregation in Byron Center, MI formed a trio from our churches’ pastors, from which one was to be called on Sunday, Christmas Day. On that trio were the Revs. A. denHartog R. Dykstra, and C. Terpstra.
Rev. T. Miersma and his family, our churches’ home missionary, arrived in Loveland, CO on Friday, December 16. That evening there was a special worship service during which Rev. Miersma was installed as a missionary. Following that service there was also a welcome program. Rev. Miersma was scheduled to preach his inaugural sermon the following Sunday evening at our Loveland PRC. Plans also called for the Miersma family to move into a rented home in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, and by the time you read this, the Lord willing, Rev. Miersma will be busy getting acquainted with the people and work there.
In our November 1 issue of the “News” we mentioned that the Consistory of the Byron Center, MI PRC had appointed some church members to help set up a church library. Well, this committee is asking for your help. They desire to start a library to help with the spiritual up-building of their members, as well as of visitors. But, of course, in order to accomplish this they need books. And that’s where you come in. They are looking first for book donations, and second for help from someone who knows how to catalog books. Books are accepted, subject to library-committee approval. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mr. Walt DeLange at (616) 698-8035, or write him at 3062 Paris Park Dr. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49508.
The congregation of the Georgetown PRC, presently meeting at Heritage Christian School in Hudsonville, MI, has organized another new Bible Study group, known as the Junior Adult Bible Study. This group was set up primarily for any young adult, married or un-married, who was not currently in another Bible Study at Georgetown.
There are certain benefits to being a small congregation. We noticed one such benefit recently in a bulletin from our Trinity PRC in Houston, TX. Church visitors from Classis West (Rev. Lanting and Rev. Bekkering) not only met with the Consistory on December 7, but were included in an informal dinner with the entire congregation that evening. Something like that would be impossible in a larger congregation.
At their annual congregational meeting in December, the membership of the Peace PRC in Lynwood, IL gave approval to begin groundwork on their church building project when that becomes possible. Presently they are waiting for the city of Lansing to give the go-ahead with the issuing of building permits.
Also at their annual congregational meeting, the congregation of our Hudsonville, MI PRC gave their approval to go ahead with plans to enlarge and soundproof the study in their parsonage. This move was necessary because, when the parsonage was built, it was anticipated that the pastor would use the study in the church, but over time this study has become the church office and is no longer available for study use.
Each year in December, Heritage Christian School in Hudsonville, MI takes collections for worthy causes. This year’s Christmas collection was designated for Faith Christian School (our new school in Randolph, WI), specifically for its library.
Faith Christian School’s Mothers’ Club sponsored a special Christmas Singspiration in mid-December at the Randolph PRC.
The South Holland, IL PR Christian School gave their annual All-School Christmas program on December 20. The students developed the theme “I AM Alpha and Omega,” based on Revelation 1:18
The congregation of the Hope PRC in Redlands, CA has changed their regular broadcast of the Reformed Witness Hour to radio station KPRO 1570 AM. There are two broadcasts every week, Saturday at 7:30 P.M. and Sunday at 2:30 P.M.
