Mission Activities Pittsburgh, PA is a city built on steep hills, and when too much rain falls in a short period of time it can cause extensive property damage due partly to erosion. First of all, hearty congratulations are to be given to candidates Barry Gritters and Ken Hanko on their completion of seminary instruction and also their successful examination by Synod. May our faithful covenant God provide these candidates a place to labor in His vineyard. I look forward to informing you about the calling of both candidates.

Since our last column, there is much to report concerning the activity of our calling churches. Due to the vacancy left by Rev. Koole who, as we earlier reported, accepted the call to Redlands, California, our Randolph, Wisconsin congregation extended a call to Rev. Slopsema of our Edgerton, Minnesota church. The following handwritten sentence at the bottom of a Randolph bulletin reveals the response they received, “Rev. Slopsema has accepted the call!!!” As a result, Edgerton has formed a trio of Reverends Bekkering, Bruinsma, and Houck.

The days of summer vacation are long gone and forgotten and there is a renewed emphasis and dedication to the study of God’s Word. Mr. Wigger is a member of the Protestant Reformed Church in Hudsonville, Michigan. Minister Activities The Lord led Candidate Cory Griess to accept the call to Calvary PRC in Hull, IA. We rejoice that our heavenly Father has provided Calvary with its first pastor, after nearly two years of vacancy, and that the Lord has also provided a place for Mr. Griess. Mr. Griess will be examined at a special meeting of Classis West on October 21. Three months ago we reported concerning the difficulty of our bulletin typists to find room for the numerous spring bulletin announcements. Things are quite different now: announcements are spread out across the page and excess space is often given to a variety of poems and other quotes.

Rev. Joostens has declined the calls extended to him from Redlands, California and Lynden, Washington. You may remember that Lynden’s call was for a missionary to the Monroe – Mt. Vernon area of Washington state. From a Loveland bulletin we have learned that Isabel, South Dakota has extended a call to the pastor of our Edmonton, Alberta, Canada congregation, Rev. Moore. 

At this writing many of our young people are preparing to attend their annual Young People’s Convention. This year’s convention, planned by the societies of our Hull and Doon, Iowa and Edgerton, Minnesota churches, is being held in Northwest Iowa. The planned convention speeches are as follows:  Aug. 17, Rev. Kuiper, “Called to Obedience”  Aug. 18, Rev. Bruinsma, “Called to Moral Purity”  Aug. 19, Rev. Kortering, “Called to Faithful Church Membership.” 

Candidates Tom Miersma and Jon Smith have received and accepted calls from our Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Edgerton, Minnesota congregations, respectively.

The ministers of our congregations held a conference at the Spring Valley Campgrounds near Bloomingdale during the month of June. Professor H. Hanko spoke on the subject, “Sanctification and Our Nature.”
