Perhaps you recall that Rev. Heys spent three weeks of November in New Jersey. He writes that he enjoyed the time spent there, both in preaching on the Sabbath and in conducting mid-week Bible classes. The group is small, of course, but, both for the Sunday worship services and the other meetings, there are often “as many visiting families as there are families of the congregation.”  On his return to his own congregation in Holland, Michigan, Rev. Heys gave a short report, in his Sunday church bulletin, concerning his activities in Prospect Park. He wrote as follows:

Our church in Redlands, California has extended a call to Rev. Kenneth Koole of Randolph, Wisconsin. The Redlands trio also included Rev. Marvin Kamps and Rev. Richard Moore.  A review of calls declined recently is as follows: Rev. Kamps from Lynden to serve as home missionary; Professor H. C. Hoeksema from Hudsonville to serve as minister-on-loan to Christchurch, New Zealand; Professor H. Hanko from Redlands; and Rev. David Engelsma from Hope, Walker, Michigan.

Hope Church in Walker, Michigan scheduled a special congregational meeting on Monday, March 10. The congregation voted to extend a call to one of its own members, Professor Herman Hanko. The trio also included Rev. G. Van Baren and Rev. B. Woudenberg. Our church in Redlands, California extended a call to Rev. Kenneth Koole of Randolph, Wisconsin.  Rev. Robert Harbach was scheduled to have eye surgery on Wednesday, March 5, in Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Delegates of Classis West attended an officebearers’ conference Tuesday, February 5, in Doon, Iowa. Rev. Moore presented a paper, on that occasion, on an aspect of the work of the deacons. On Tuesday evening Candidate Mark Hoeksema preached his Classical sermon in a special worship service held in Doon Church. And on Wednesday there was the convening of Classis West, part of the agenda for which was the examination of Candidate Hoeksema, pastor-elect of Ebenezer Protestant Reformed Church of Forbes, North Dakota.

Rev. Kenneth Koole has declined the call he received from our congregation in Redlands, California. Their new trio includes Rev. Richard Moore, Rev. James Slopsema, and Rev. Gise Van Baren. Rev. Schipper, one of our “retired” ministers, plans to preach for the Redlands congregation during the months of April and May. Since there are more pulpits than ministers to fill them in our denomination, our retired ministers have been of great help in bringing the lively preaching of the holy gospel to many of our pulpits from week to week.

March 17 was the last of Rev. Harbach’s four Sundays in Houston, Texas. He is, as you surely know, considering the call to serve there as home missionary. He was granted permission to announce his decision three weeks after his return from Texas. He was to be followed in Houston by Rev. Lubbers, who is currently considering the call to serve as pastor of our Prospect Park congregation in New Jersey. Rev. Kortering declined the call from Loveland, Colorado. The new trio of Loveland consists of Revs. Kuiper, Lanting, and VanBaren.

Our congregation in Redlands, California has extended a call to Rev. Gise Van Baren to be their pastor. The Redlands trio also included Rev. Richard Moore and Rev. James Slopsema.  Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Engelsma left for Singapore on April 29. They will assist Rev. Arie den Hartog in his mission work there. According to the bulletin of our Covenant PRC, the Engelsmas plan to work in Singapore for about three months.
