Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, land given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of...

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize. So run that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air; But I keep under my body and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. I Cor. 9:24-27 I so run,...

The thirteenth Psalm is, first, the outcry of a heart that is overburdened with grief, chief of which is the feeling of forsakenness; second, the prayer for relief in the face of jeering enemies; and, third, the song of a grateful saint. In the first part of the Psalm, that speaks of forsakenness, we hear the cry: How long? four times. The first cry sounds strange. There is a great contradiction in it. Or so it seems. Attend to this: “How long, Jehovah, wilt Thou forget me perpetually? It seems to us that if Jehovah would forget us perpetually, there...

The phrase “of the world” denotes the relation which the Church sustains to the world. It signifies that the Church was given to the world as light; that this light must shine, in order that men (the elect) may glorify God. “A city set upon a hill cannot be hid, neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The...

And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep rad the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; and said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house a house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath...

During our labors at Manhattan we have continually been harassed by foul and wicked arguments against the truth of God’s sovereignty, as it is revealed to us in God’s Word, and maintained by us as Protestant Reformed churches. Although the Rev. Bratt lacks the moral courage to face us in open and public debate on the issues of “Common Grace,” to which we have repeatedly challenged him, he cannot refrain from making derogatory charges against our churches. In this dishonorable practice he is ably assisted by the so-called leader of the young people, Mr. Henry Westra, who claims to be...

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not...

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus ….Luke 24:13 In reading the accounts of all the different appearances of Christ after His resurrection, it becomes plain to us, that some change had taken place in the appearance of Jesus, enough to cause the disciples to hesitate to declare that it is He, yet not enough to leave any permanent doubt as to His identity. In the garden Mary Magdalene was so absorbed in her sorrow, that she failed at first to see who Jesus was. But when her name was spoken, and she...

One of the most serious objections to the theory of common grace is that it instils in men’s minds wrong thoughts of God. According to this theory God is a friend of all men, of the reprobated as well as of the elect. The former, too, God loves and blesses. How thoroughly wrong this doctrine is seen to be when viewed in the light of the truth of Scripture. Prayed the psalmist, “who shall ascend into the holy hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who...

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on Him. . . . But the other answering rebuked him. . . And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. Luke 23:39-43. Strange, certainly, that among those who rail at Jesus at such a time, one of those crucified along with him should be numbered. Those brought out to share together the shame and agony of a public execution, have generally looked on each other with a kindly and indulgent eye. Outcasts from the world’s sympathy, they have drawn largely upon the sympathy of...
