The prophecy of judgment. The divine mission of Ezekiel. The vision of the glory of Jehovah. In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as the prophet was by the captives by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and he saw visions of God. In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of the king Jehoiachim’s captivity, the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Ezekiel, the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar. Vision of the four cherubims....

“Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6, 7 ‘‘Be careful for nothing.” This statement from the apostle’s pen is equivalent in meaning to the one just previously made, “Rejoice in the Lord alway,” the only difference being that the one is negative and the other positive. “Be careful in nothing,” or, as we of this day say, “Do not worry.” We understand the apostle, to be...

At Numbers 14:34 the statement occurs, “And ye shall know my hostility (erroneously translated, “And ye shall know my breach of promise”). The pronoun ye has reference to the apostate Israelites, who in the carnal rage had wanted to know why the Lord had brought them to the border of Canaan that they, their wives and their children, should be a prey. The notice, “And ye shall know my hostility,” must be taken to mean that the Lord would be continually against the apostates, would pursue them with His curse, until the carcasses of them all be wasted in the...

Our Heidelberg Catechism is part of our Reformed heritage. It belongs to the Reformed Symbols or Confessions. The other parts, that with the Heidelberger constitute the Three Forms of Unity, are the Nether- land or Belgic Confession, and the Canons of Dordrecht. Our age is not characterized by a clear knowledge of and love of distinct doctrine. Creeds do not meet with much favor in the church of today. Some churches still have creeds but without being acquainted with their contents; others have so abbreviated their confessions that they contain no distinctive doctrine at all; many have adopted the deceiving...

The sign of the bread and water. The prophet is bidden to eat his bread with quaking, and to drink his water with trembling, and in the name of the Lord say to the people that so they, too, shall eat and drink. The cities shall be laid waste and the land shall be desolate, and they shall know that He is the Lord. The near execution of the punishment. The repeated preliminary announcement. The Lord will make the proverb, “The days are prolonged and every vision faileth,” to cease. They shall say instead, “The days are at hand, and...

The events recorded in the 20th chapter of the book of Numbers occurred at Kadesh and near it. First among them is the death of Miriam. She has survived the hardships of the desert and reached a great age. Her usefulness and vigor past, she is glad, no doubt, when the call comes. How is a life like this of Miriam to be reckoned? We have seen her as a young girl, eager and concerned, watching the cradle of Moses and aiding in his deliverance. She is spoken of as sharing in the mission of Moses and Aaron. When she...

The people of Israel were encamped at Kadesh. The period of the forty years had drawn to a close, so that the time for the host of the Lord to take possession of the promised land was at hand. Two routes lay open to them: the one direct through the land of the Edomites, the other long and circuitous, stretching around and eastward of Edom. Accordingly Moses sent the king of Edom a message, petitioning him to allow the people of Israel to pass through his land. The message was friendly and warm. The first part of it declared by...

My sincere apology to the Rev. H. De Wolf for my failure to assign to him a share of the work in the proposed outlines for the Standard Bearer of 1941-1942. I do not know how to explain the omission, except that, as I always emphasized in school: “nihil humanum alienum est mihil” and “errare est humanum.” Rev. De Wolf will, of course, gladly believe of me that the omission was not intentional. It was just a bad blunder on my part. But it can easily be corrected. Looking over the outlines, I noticed that the Rev. L. Doezema was...

LORD’S DAY 1 Question 1. What is thy only comfort in life and death? Answer. That I, with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who, with His precious blood, hath fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation; and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me...

When one looks forward in eager anticipation to an event he is gratified when that event meets his anticipation. Thus it was with the convention. Last year, being on the committee, I was not able to attend any of the meetings and so, this year I was anxious to see the “other side” of the convention. And the “other side” fulfilled all my expectations. We arrived Friday morning just in time for the sight-seeing tour, and as we drove up I noticed a small group of young people. I was disappointed. I thought, “Is this all the young people there...
