This has come mainly from outside of Protestant Reformed circles. It has come from those who are opposed to us and our distinctively Reformed position. [Address delivered at the Annual RFPA Meeting, Sept. 18, 1975]

(At the annual meeting of the publishing association which prints theStandard Bearer, inspirational speeches are given— usually by one of the ministers of the Protestant Reformed Churches. At one of the meetings, in 1945, the late Rev. H. Hoeksema delivered the following address which was subsequently distributed in pamphlet form. Its message is surely as pertinent today for theStandard Beareras it begins the second half-century of its publication.)

This does not mean that knowing Him in that salvation which is in Christ we now dare to sin against Him. Faith does not give us the courage to sin against our God, Whom we know is a consuming fire. Instead this fear of the Lord causes us to run to the cross to find refuge underneath it. The man who knows and believes the awfully destructive power of electricity and the perfect safety of the insulation on the wire does not, because he believes in the safety of that insulation, now dare to touch that bare wire.
