Report of Classis East held in Hope Church, July 11, 1962.
Rev. G. Lanting, president of the April Classis, led in opening devotions, and declared the Classis properly constituted when the credentials had been accepted. Creston and Grand Haven were represented by one delegate each.
Rev. A. Mulder, following the order of rotation, presided over this meeting, while Rev. Lanting recorded the minutes.
The first part of our meeting kept the Classis busy with routine matters. The minutes of the April meeting were read and adopted. The Stated Clerk reported on his correspondence, and the Classical Committee tendered its report.
Requests for classical appointment were presented by Grand Haven, Creston and Southeast churches. The report of the committee to prepare a schedule of appointments was adopted as follows: Grand Haven: Aug. 12—M. Schipper, Aug. 19—G. Vos, Sept. 16—A. Mulder, Sept. 23—H. Hanko, Sept. 30—G. Lanting, Oct. 7—C. Hanko. Creston: July 15—G. Lanting, Aug. 5—A. Mulder, Aug. 26—C. Hanko, Sept. 2—G. Vos, Sept. 23—M. Schipper, Oct. 14—H. Hanko.Southeast: July 15—C. Hanko, July 22—A. Mulder, Aug. 5—G. Lanting, Aug. 26—H. Hanko, Sept. 30—G. Vos, Oct. 14—M. Schipper.
Classis also treated material sent to it by the Stated Clerk of Synod relative to the Rev. R. Veldman. Classis was informed by the delegates of Southeast Church that Rev. Veldman was unseated as president of the consistory on the ground of his having submitted his resignation as minister of Southeast Church. The consistory of Southeast Church also presented to Classis its reply to the decisions of Classis in April. A committee was appointed, to advise Classis on these matters, and Classis adjourned until 7 p.m. when it continued its meeting in Hudsonville.
Classis adopted the advice of the committee with two minor amendments. The advice in brief was: 1. That Southeast Church in conjunction with the nearest neighboring consistory proceed with the suspension of Rev. R. Veldman, that it make this known to the congregation and sister churches, and the Classical Committee is empowered to assist Southeast Church if that church needs it, and to call a special Classis if need be. 2. To grant Southeast Church the classical appointments they requested. 3. To vote for a member to the Classical Committee to fill the unexpired term of Rev. R. Veldman. 4. That Classis abide by the decisions of the April Classis and not accede to the request of Southeast Church to rescind its actions. 5. Advise Southeast Church to go the church-orderly way with its grievances.
The Church Visitors gave their report which revealed that the conditions in our churches are as good as can be expected.
Rev. M. Schipper was appointed moderator for Southeast Church upon their request for a moderator. Rev. C. Hanko was chosen member of the Classical Committee to fill the unexpired term of Rev. R. Veldman.
Questions of Article 41 of the Church Order were asked and answered satisfactorily.
Classis decided to meet next time on Oct. 3, 1962 at our Hudsonville Church.
After the chairman made some closing remarks expressing appreciation for the cooperation given him, the Rev. G. Vos gave thanks to God in closing prayer.
