Classis West of the Protestant Reformed Churches met in Doon, Iowa, the evening of October 17 and all day, October 18. Classis was scheduled to: meet on September 6, but this meeting was postponed so that Classis could examine Mr. Richard Flikkema at the later date.
Eleven ministers, twelve elders, and one deacon represented the churches of Classis West. Three ministers from Classis East were present as synodical delegates ad examina and were given advisory vote.
Rev. D. Kuiper led the Classis in its opening devotions on Wednesday morning. He spoke to Classis on John 3:29, 30: “He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.” Rev. R. Miersma then presided over this Classis. Several delegates were present for the first time and signed the Formula of Subscription: W. Bruinsma (South Holland); A. Reichert (Isabel); U. Tolsma (Edmonton); and J. Regnerus, Jr. (Randolph).
The main work of the Classis was the examination of Mr. Richard Flikkema, who had accepted the call of the Hope Protestant Reformed Church of Isabel, South Dakota.
Mr. Flikkema preached a sermon on II Peter 3:8, 9before the Doon congregation, in the presence of Classis, on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, Classis examined him in Dogmatics; Practical qualifications; Knowledge of Holy Scripture; Knowledge of the Confessions; and Controversy, as required by the “Decisions” of Article 4 of the Church Order.
With the concurrence of the synodical deputies, Classis approved the examination and advised Isabel to proceed with Mr. Flikkema’s ordination into the office of the ministry of the Word and Sacraments. This has since taken place, so that all twelve churches in Classis West now have a pastor.
Classis expressed its thanks to God for this gift of a pastor and teacher, as well as for the faithful labor of our seminary. The delegates and visitors congratulated Rev. and Mrs. Flikkema and commended them to the blessing of God.
Isabel’s request for $1,200 for the expense of moving their new pastor was granted.
The rest of Classis’ work was routine. Classis heard various reports. Among them was the report of the Reading Sermon Committee (Edgerton), which informed Classis that several new reading sermons are now available.
Classis increased to 15 cents per mile (for two delegates riding together) the amount that is paid for traveling to and from Classis by car.
Classis will meet next in Edgerton, Minnesota on March 7, 1979, the Lord willing.
