THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD, by J.H. Jowett; Baker Book House, 1969; 265 pp., $2.95 (paper).

This is one more book in Baker’s “Preaching Helps Series”. It contains sermons chiefly on Paul’s description of the armour of God in Ephesians 6 by the popular minister of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York.

While on the whole I have no great pleasure in books of sermons, these are not the worst I have read. Especially when I first began the book, I was struck with their expository character. It seemed to me however, that towards the end the sermons became less and less expositions of Scripture and more and more explanations of certain ideas of the preacher.

While the book is not always theologically sound, it gives some fresh ideas and insights into this material of Ephesians 6 and might be of some assistance to a minister preaching on this section. But its chief value, such as it is, is devotional. It makes for very nice devotional reading.
