Foul Arguments Refuted

During our labors at Manhattan we have continually been harassed by foul and wicked arguments against the truth of God’s sovereignty, as it is revealed to us in God’s Word, and maintained by us as Protestant Reformed churches. Although the Rev. Bratt lacks the moral courage to face us in open and public debate on the issues of “Common Grace,” to which we have repeatedly challenged him, he cannot refrain from making derogatory charges against our churches. In this dishonorable practice he is ably assisted by the so-called leader of the young people, Mr. Henry Westra, who claims to be...

Victory Over the Grave

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not...

The Disputings of the Two of Them

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus ….Luke 24:13 In reading the accounts of all the different appearances of Christ after His resurrection, it becomes plain to us, that some change had taken place in the appearance of Jesus, enough to cause the disciples to hesitate to declare that it is He, yet not enough to leave any permanent doubt as to His identity. In the garden Mary Magdalene was so absorbed in her sorrow, that she failed at first to see who Jesus was. But when her name was spoken, and she...

Prophecies Concerning Jerusalem

The commonwealth of Israel, from its establishment to its dissolution, subsisted for more than fifteen hundred years. In delivering their law, Moses attested that he was vested with a divine commission and that the law which he gave, originated with God. In enjoining obedience to it, after having led them to the borders of Canaan, he promises many blessings to accompany their appliances to the law, and announces grievous judgments that would overtake them for the breach of it. The history of the Jews, in each succeeding age, attest to the truth of the last prophetic warnings of the first...

The Cry for Pardon (Ps. 25:11)

Beautiful words we find in this Psalm. The covenant relation of God and His people is revealed throughout it. This is clear from the context in all that precedes and follows the text. The poet addresses God by His covenant Name, Jehovah. Only in and through that Name pardon is possible. And speaking of pardon, God’s ways became the ways of mercy and truth to him. Therefore, the whole of the Psalm presents a man vexed in spirit and reveals the deepest emotion of one who cries for deliverance. He is indignant, when he beholds the enemies, forsaking the precepts...

Beware of False Teachers (3)

From the Scriptural passages we quoted in our previous articles on the above subject (see the issue of Feb. 15) it became evident that the false teacher is motivated by carnal considerations. He serves not the Lord Jesus Christ, but his own belly, his carnal purposes and desires, his own name and position and glory, the acquisition of filthy lucre. These purposes he cannot serve by teaching and preaching the truth, that always is contrary to the flesh, condemns it; hence, he needs the lie and. teaches it in order to realize his carnal ends. But from the same passages...
