Rev. VanBaren is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches.   Public Schools—or Parental Schools?  I often quote Cal Thomas, whose hard-hitting and conservative articles usually address the issues of the day relevantly and accurately. That was strikingly true in two recent articles speaking to the issue of public school education vs. parentally controlled education in private or home schools. In our fallen world, the words “royal children” or “royal family” often create in our minds visions of riches, luxury, and multitudes of servants—in fact, a life of ease and pleasure. Yet, even in earthly realms, this is only a part of the picture. In times past and present, kings and queens have trained their children for their place in life, expecting them to study and acquire the abilities they will one day need. The Old Testament tabernacle and its sacrifices were mere “copies” of the real and heavenly. They were mere means to show by representation what the corresponding reality is!

God saved us, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Often in these words an indication of or reference to holy baptism is found. Baptism, according to this explanation, is the washing of regeneration. But although it is true that holy baptism can indeed be conceived of as a washing of regeneration, when regeneration is conceived of in the broader sense of...
