So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD . . .  And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face.  Deuteronomy 34:5, 10 The journey of Moses’ earthly life was all but ended. It had been a long life and eventful, with many strange and different paths to be traveled. But now he had journeyed as far as he could go. Israel, the nation which he loved so dearly and had led so far so tenderly, must...

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers . . . did drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. I Corinthians 10:1, 4 Daily Israel arose from its sleep to gaze upon the bread from heaven which in the morning light covered the floor of the desert. It was a beautiful sight, glistening all white under the rising sun. They gathered of it until they had plenty to eat. They ate of it until they were satisfied. The taste of...

It is to be noted that this article does not merely present proof from Scripture in support of the doctrine of the Trinity. This is plain from the opening statement of Article IX: “All this we know, as well from the testimonies of holy writ, as from their operations, and chiefly by those we feel in ourselves.” Hence, the evidence of which the article speaks is two-fold: proof from Holy Scripture and evidence from experience. Undoubtedly this is to be connected with the later statement of this same article: “In all which places we are fully taught, that there are three persons in...

Missions in the Old Testament I want to comment on Wilbur Bruinsma’s article in the January 1, 2008 SB on “God’s Covenant: The Foundation of Missions.” He states that Israel in the Old Testament did not do mission work. But wasn’t Israel meant to? (Is. 43:10, 12; 44:8; 52:5; Dan. 12:3;Prov. 14:25). God’s covenant did include those outside Israel, e.g., Ruth and Rahab. And Noah was most certainly a preacher of righteousness to those around him. I would agree that up until New Testament times we hear of very few outside Israel who were part of the covenant, but it seems...

Rev. Slopsema is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan and president of Synod 2007. This is the text of the Presynodical Sermon, delivered on June 9, 2008 in Hope PRC. Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23 Solomon addressed these words to his son. They apply therefore first to the children and young people of the covenant. But these words apply also to every member of the church, to every family in the church, to every congregation of the Lord Jesus Christ, and finally to every ecclesiastical body...

Rev. Kuiper is pastor of the Protestant Reformed Church in Randolph, Wisconsin. Regarding the duties of the deacons toward the congregation, and especially toward her needy members, we have written much. Now we must examine the congregation’s duty toward her deacons—that of supporting her diaconate. The support to which we refer is the congregation’s sincere, heartfelt, and grateful giving to the deacons for the care of the poor and needy. Primarily this is done by giving to the benevolent fund, but it can also be done by helping the deacons in any concrete way in which they ask for help...
