Mrs. Miersma is the wife of Rev. Thomas Miersma, missionary in Spokane, Washington. “I don’t have time right now.” “I’ll do that when I have more time.” “I finally have some free time.” “I wish I could just have some time for myself!” How frequently such expressions cross our lips or thoughts and those of our children. Stewardship of time is a challenging subject for us to deal with. God’s Word clearly sets forth the principles, but applying these principles is something that we must each do in the place in which God has set us, in the freedom that...

Rev. Slopsema is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church of Grand Rapids, Michigan. That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection…if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.  Philippians 3:10, 11 At one time Paul had confidence in the flesh. He was confident that he could attain eternal life on the basis of his circumcision, his pedigree (he was an Israelite, of the tribe of Benjamin), his position as a Pharisee, and his works. However, the things that were once gain to him, he now counts as loss for Christ. Once he...

When we speak of the school, we mean the existing Christian Schools, or more specifically, our own, Prot. Ref. Schools. And when we speak of the church we have in mind the local congregations with their consistories, as their families are represented in the school. We could express it this way, what is the relation between the church as institute and the Christian School at any given place?  This problem is more complex and more important today than would appear on the surface.

It may seem strange and out of place to some of our readers that we should spend so...

Previous article in this series: November 15, 2005, p. 85.   The Apostolic Blessing  Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ. Galatians 1:3 All of Paul’s letters begin with a blessing that he pronounces on the church or churches to which he writes. In fact, not only does every letter begin with a blessing, but in every letter the blessing is identical, even when Paul writes to an individual such as Timothy and Titus. However,...

Mr. Williams is editor of the British Reformed Journal. On Saturday 22nd July 2000, at Cefn Lea, a thousand feet above sea level amongst the beautiful hill country of Mid-Wales, we gathered for the sixth BRF Conference. We came, not only from all over the British Isles, but from as far afield as the USA, the Netherlands, and even from far-off New Zealand. All ages were represented, but specially it was heartening to see the happy phalanx of interested young people there, many over from the PR churches in the USA. Old friends met joyfully, and new friends were made,...

Herman Hoeksema was the first editor of the Standard Bearer. Essay read at a Conference of some Christian Reformed and Protestant Reformed Ministers (Translated from the Dutch by Rev. H. Veldman) With regard to what I have said thus far there can be but little, if any, difference of opinion. In the rest of this essay I now offer you an introduction, from our viewpoint, to the discussion of our doctrinal differences, submitting this introduction, of course, to your free discussion and criticism. I would consider it advisable if also one of the Christian Reformed brethren would present such an...
