Disappointment. I was disappointed in the articles of the Rev. Zwier under the general caption “Gods Algemeene Goedheid.” I am disappointed in the contents of the articles. From the Rev. Zwier one might expect wholesome, consistent exposition. Instead, the exegesis on the passages in dispute is decidedly superficial and arbitrary. This is written despite the fact that the author of the articles is very confident that his explanations are irrefutable while the exegesis of his opponents is largely prejudicial and frequently “inlegkunde van de eerste sort.” The adversaries of the doctrine of common grace do not exegete honestly, implies the...

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Acts 2:16-18 This is that! The “that” is the promise, spoken centuries before, and preserved in the Holy Scriptures of the old dispensation. And...

“And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.” Luke 24:51, 52 “Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.” Acts 2:33 Natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God!

Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Acts 8:13 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:36 In God’s providence, two prominent men heard the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ as it was proclaimed by Philip the evangelist. One of them, Simon the sorcerer, was an influential man in Samaria, who had bewitched the people and made himself out to...

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4

Acts 2:16-18 As the 120 disciples of Jesus were assembled on Pentecost in an upper room in Jerusalem, three very unusual things happened....

In this last essay of our exposition of Acts 13:32, 33 we wish to call further attention to the element in the text, that speaks of the preaching, the proclaiming of the glad tidings of the gospel, that God hath fulfilled the promise in raising Jesus, our Lord, from the dead. This glad tidings is preached definitely to the people, to the congregation as a word of comfort and exhortation. Thus we attempted to point out in our former writing on this subject. But the question still remains in this connection (it persists) does this preaching, this evangelizing merely come...

But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Acts 8:20-23 Simon the sorcerer was, supposedly, converted. Philip the evangelist went to the city of Samaria to preach...
