Peeking Through Hubble David L. DeBruyn reports that images from the Hubble Space Telescope show galaxies that man has never seen before.1 The discoveries are “unlikely to explain burning scientific questions about the origins of dark matter or why the universe appears to be accelerating.” But the discoveries do demonstrate how enormous the universe is. DeBruyn writes, A widely used analogy is that there are more stars within the Milky Way than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth. That is a mind-boggling concept to be sure, but now consider this: The announcement earlier this month...

Brief Highlights from the CRCNA’s 2016 Agenda for Synod The Christian Reformed Church in America’s 669-page agenda has been posted on the Internet. Below are some of the interesting items on the 2016 Synod’s agenda. The Synod will receive recommendations from the Board of Trustees to adopt “Research Methodology Guidelines for Synodical Committees and Task Forces.” The paragraph that introduces the “Methodology Guidelines” is a noteworthy and candid admission that the CRC does not use Scripture alone as the foundation for its faith and life. It reads, Nearly every year synod appoints study committees and task forces. In the past,...

In the article in the February 15 issue of the Standard Bearer (p. 226), quite a bit of ink and paper was expended in writing about Donald Trump’s specious religious claims. I have been waiting for a sequel exposé of Senator Rafael Edward (“Ted”) Cruz, but so far in vain. The readers and subscribers of the SB, I believe, are astute enough to recognize that Mr. Trump’s Presbyterian claims are not credible. It is no feat to recognize error when it is so wrong. However, Mr. Cruz’s Christian claims are not so easily discerned. He and his father have connections...

Gender Confusion In Mark 10:16 Jesus says, “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Because our society rejects the authority of Scripture, it is utterly confused about how to identify people. World magazine reports on the consequences of this confusion: At the end of 2015, two human rights commissions over 2,800 miles apart enacted new rules that could be precedent-setting for the gender battle across the nation, including giving people the right to use whichever locker rooms and bathrooms they choose. The New York City Commission on Human Rights issued guidelines Dec. 21 to...

John Piper Stirs Up the “Sanctification Debate” John Piper is a well-known pastor (now retired) and widely thought of as a leader in Reformed circles. Thus, any subtle errors that he teaches are all the more dangerous and in need of exposure. This is even more so when his errors contradict justification by faith alone, one of the cardinal doctrines of Scripture. Those who seek to learn from Piper must be aware that Piper subtly denies the doctrine of justification by faith alone in a way that aligns him with the hardly mentioned but still dangerous heresy of the Federal...

The Decision On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States redefined marriage and effectively legalized homosexual marriages in all 50 states. The next day Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. explained the decision: Everything has changed and nothing has changed. The Supreme Court’s decision yesterday is a central assault upon marriage as the conjugal union of a man and a woman and in a five to four decision the nation’s highest court has now imposed its mandate redefining marriage on all fifty states. As Chief Justice Roberts said in his dissent, “The majority’s decision is an act of...

PC-USA’s Tolerance of Homosexuality becomes Official The news media covered this story well, so many of our readers already know about it. But it is still worthwhile to take note of the Presbyterian Church-USA’s official redefinition of marriage that approves homosexual unions. Holly Yan of CNN reports:1 The country’s largest Presbyterian denomination has changed its definition of marriage to include gay couples—though not explicitly. Presbyterian Church (USA) approved an amendment to its constitution after most of its 171 presbyteries—or governing bodies—voted for it, PC (USA) said Tuesday. Before, the definition said marriage was between “a man and a woman.” The...

Rev. Spronk is pastor of Faith Protestant Reformed Church in Jenison, Michigan. This is the edited text of the speech Rev. Spronk gave at the annual meeting of the RFPA on September 25, 2014. First article was in the November 15, 2014 issue, p. 89. We have to know church history because it is required by God (see the previous article). We also want to know church history because of the rich benefits the knowledge of this history affords us. Of the numerous benefits of knowing church history I have chosen to highlight four in this article. First, knowledge of...
