We shall notice the following in this Parable of the talents as to its several elements: First of all we should carefully notice the setting of the Parable. We refer particularly to the setting wherein Jesus shows us therelationship of the servants (bond-men) to their lord (master!). It is all in the control of the “lord” in the Parable. It is all his plan and his good-pleasure. He will go on a journey abroad. This will necessitate his absence for a short while, or longer. The exact time of his absence is known only to him.

The passage which we will this time consider contains instructions from Paul to Timothy in regard to what must be constantly held before the attention of the church in order that she may truly walk in godliness, steadfast in the truth in Christ Jesus. The church must be built and established in Christ and walk in all good works of faith and gratitude. The saints in Christ must walk in the good works which have been before prepared for her that she should walk in them.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord… But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shall come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and they sons’ wives with thee. Genesis 6:8, 18 Some Introductory Observations It was a critical time in the church of God. It was some 120 years before the Flood. We read here of the dire predicament of the holy Seed. It was the Seed promised to Eve. It was the Seed that would utterly crush the head of the Serpent’s seed (Gen. 3:15). When God promised to “establish”...

Rev. Lubbers is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Those things, which you have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.  Philippians 4:8, 9 Sometimes it takes a long time to say good-bye to a dear friend or to a brother or...

Rev. Lubbers is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches. It is a very important and fruitful endeavor to make a little study in depth of the various “manifestations” of Jesus to His disciples during the period be between His resurrection and His ascension to glory. Most of us know that there were ten such manifestations of the risen Lord. These are called inActs 1:3 “many proofs.” In each of these appearances as the living Lord He “showed himself alive” to them. He is indeed the one who says in Revelation 1:17, 18, “Fear not; I am the first and the...

Rev. Lubbers is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.  I Timothy 3:8-10 We ought to notice that the requirements for a deacon are not of a lower order than those for the teaching and ruling elders. All are called by God, all must be fit instruments to conduct themselves properly in...

Rev. Lubbers is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches. My plan is to publish two “study helps” for each of the six chapters of I Timothy. After consulting with Prof. Engelsma, Editor-in-Chief, I saw the fitness of writing a short “Overview” before writing the study helps. We must keep in mind that these study helps must be brief, yet comprehensive of the main thrust of the letter. Furthermore, we must bear in mind that this letter is, in the deepest sense, issued by the risen Christ from His throne at, God’s right hand. It is no human letter,...

Rev. Lubbers is a minister emeritus in the Protestant Reformed Churches. We begin our study of I Timothy under the motto which Jesus suggests in John 5:39: “Search the Scriptures . . . they are they which testify of (concerning) me.” Our great desire is that these lessons will be of benefit to your diligent searching of all the Scriptures, in both Testaments, Old and New! A brief, clear, and lucid interpretation will be made under the twofold headings: Firstly, the great basic distinction between the apostolic gospel truth concerning the fulfilled law of God, and the legalistic use of the...

“Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the house without man, and the land be utterly desolate. And the LORD have removed man far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land….” Isaiah 6:11-13 The Divine Timetable for Judgments in the Goodly Land We should never forget that the land of Canaan was truly a goodly land. If even a part of the earth could be singled out as being in a unique sense “God’s Country,” it was the land of Canaan, the accursed son of Ham...
