Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. Worship of God is a big part of our lives as God’s people. In reality, the whole life of a child of God is worship. The believer is constantly in God’s presence, and the whole purpose of his life is to praise and glorify God through all he thinks, says, and does. To do that is to worship God. Worship in this sense is a full-time calling and responsibility. But when we say that worship is a big part of our lives, we have in mind our formal...

Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord Isaiah 58:13, 14The sabbath day is widely broken today. This is done not only by the world, but also by the church. It is desecrated by working. For many it is business-as-usual...

Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. Contentment is a Christian virtue that needs our careful attention. Since it is often mentioned in the Word of God, it ought to occupy a prominent place in our lives. Contentment is a spiritual virtue that governs the attitude we have toward everything earthly. To be content is to be satisfied within, with regard to all the outward circumstances of one’s life. But contentment is more than that. It is an inner satisfaction with regard to all the outward circumstances of life that is not dependent upon or...

Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. God’s people are always in need of words of comfort. God knows that. For that reason He commands the church, and more specifically ministers of the gospel, “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem!” (Is. 40:1, 2a.) God says: “Don’t speak harsh words to My people—words of wrath and judgment. Those are words for the ungodly and wicked. Speak instead words of love and mercy and compassion. Speak words that will lift My people up. Speak words that will dispel their...

Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. Sadness is a big part of earthly life. Countless circumstances and experiences make us sad. At times it seems we are not only passing through a valley of the shadow of death, but actually living in such a valley. As Moses puts it in Psalm 90, our days are characterized by labor and sorrow, by iniquities and sins, by death and dying. Life is a vale of tears. But life for the child of God should not be an unhappy and joyless experience. It ought not be, and need...

Rev. Kleyn is pastor of First Protestant Reformed Church in Edgerton, Minnesota. The life of the child of God can be summarized in one word, thankfulness. That is what the Christian life is all about. It is not about seeking earthly pleasures and joys. It is not about being successful and prosperous on earth. It is not about striving to keep self and others happy. It is about being thankful to God. And, yes, that means being thankful also when life is difficult. Thankful always and thankful in all things. As believers in Christ, we certainly have much for which...
