Thursday, Feb. 8, was a happy day for the congregation of our Southwest Church. The congregation came together for the purpose of sharing their pastor’s joy in celebrating the 25th anniversary of his ordination into the Ministry. To the Schipper family that date had triple meaning for on it the birthday anniversaries of both father and daughter were also celebrated. The congregation enjoyed a dinner in the church parlors before meeting in the auditorium for the program. Guests included Rev. Schipper’s father and mother from Holland, Rev. and Mrs. H. The Prot. Ref. High School Circle sponsored a public meeting of the friends of our own high school Nov. 12, at Southwest Church in Grand Rapids. The speaker was Prof. H.C. Hoeksema and his topic was, “Parental Obligation Respecting Protestant Reformed Secondary Education.” In this way the High School Circle is doing the School Society a service by helping to arouse the interest of the parents in the necessity of having our own high school, besides doing the parents a service by making them aware of their responsibility in this vital matter.
Rev. H. Veldman, pastor of our church in Redlands, California since 1959, has accepted the call from Hope Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rev. J. Kortering, of Hull, has declined the call which came to him from our church in Loveland, Colo. Rev. G. VanBaren, of Randolph, Wis., will be the speaker on the Reformed Witness Hour in May. Rev. H. Veldman, of Hope Church in Grand Rapids, received the call to be Home Missionary of our churches. First Church, of Grand Rapids, extended a call to Rev. J.A. Heys of South Holland, Illinois.
Kalamazoo’s Annual Congregational Meeting held Dec. 2 included consideration of a permanent place of worship, and the newest outlet of the Reformed Witness Hour over their local WKPR beginning Dec. 6. Rev. Harbach was the speaker for the first few weeks.
Redlands has extended a call to Rev. C. Hanko of First Church. The trio also included the Revs. G. Lubbers and J. Kortering. Our Missionary, Rev. G. Lubbers is considering the call which came to him from our Loveland congregation. The others on that trio were the Revs. B. Woudenberg and G. Vos. Southwest Church has announced a new trio: Revs. G. Lanting, G. Lubbers and B. Woudenberg. Lynden’s trio consists of the Revs. G. Lubbers, G. Van den Berg and H. Veldman.
The Beacon Lights Hymn Sing was held in First Church auditorium Sunday evening, Dec. 27. Ed Langerak, president of the Beacon Lights staff, led in opening prayer, then gave the podium over to Mr. Ed Ophoff to direct the singing. With Karlene Oomkes at the organ the audience enthusiastically followed Mr. Ophoff’s direction in the singing of the familiar Christmas Carols and appropriate Psalter numbers. South Holland’s Young People are already preparing to help make the next Young People’s Convention a success. At a recent society meeting a round table discussion on the purposes of such a convention was held; participants were, Beth Van Baren, Dick Haak, Steve Poortinga, and Joanne Flikkema. Their program committee evidently understands that a convention cannot rise higher than its purposes.
