In this 40th Anniversary issue let us reminisce a little with some old news items.  Oct. 1, 1925—The first news letter appeared in theStandard Bearer in the form of a personal letter by the Rev. H. Hoeksema to “My Friend In The West”. This was written in the Holland language as was most of the material in the early issues. This “first” was in the first anniversary number of our magazine. In the same issue was a news account of the organization of a church in Byron Center, Mich., which occurred Sept. 30, 1925.

Rev. R.C. Harbach, Lynden’s pastor since 1955, has declined the call from Loveland, and has accepted the call from Kalamazoo. The Publication Committee of Oak Lawn and South Holland churches is regularly mailing pamphlets to outsiders, under the general theme, “Word of Life.” The current series is on “The Lord’s Prayer” which has been written by Rev. Rev. J.A. Heys, of South Holland, has received a call from Southwest Church in Grand Rapids, The Lord willing, Rev. H. Hoeksema will begin his annual series of radio sermons for the Reformed Witness Hour, Sunday, Dec. 1st and will conclude on Resurrection Day, March 29, 1964. Rev. Hoeksema has planned a series of sermons which expound the truth of the natures and offices of our Lord Jesus Christ. The program given by the Hope Heralds in Oak Lawn’s Church proved to be a satisfying evening of praise. The offering which was given to the Protestant Reformed Christian School in Loveland amounted to $102.80. Rev. J. Kortering, of Hull, has received a call from the congregation at Isabel; South Dakota.  First Church, of Grand Rapids, has announced the following Duo for Minister: The Revs. J.A. Heys and B. Woudenberg. The new Trio for missionary consists of the Revs. D. Engelsma, G. VanBaren, and H. Veldman. This duo and trio will be presented for the congregation’s approval at the regular annual congregational meeting November 29.

The weekend of horror for the citizens of the United States led serious minded children of God to meditate upon the mysterious ways of God, as Rev. H. Hoeksema comforted his congregation in his Sunday evening sermon with the Scriptural truth that whereas President Kennedy was slain by human hands, yet behind that act was the inscrutable wisdom of God Who rules over all the affairs of men. Surely, “He removeth kings (presidents), and he setteth up kings.”Dan. 2:21.

The taping of, the 1,000th broadcast of the Reformed Witness Hour was accomplished in a public gathering Thursday evening, Jan. 25. Rev. H. Hoeksema preached the sermon and music was furnished by the Radio Choir and by congregational singing. Beginning with this broadcast, which will be aired Sunday, March 11, the program will be announced as being “sponsored by the Protestant Reformed Churches of America” instead of “sponsored by the First Protestant Reformed Church of Grand Rapids, Michigan.” All future programs will continue to be the responsibility and under the supervision of the Consistory of the First Protestant Reformed Church...
